Women and children: Birth control pills may reduce the risk of endometrial, ovarian and colorectal cancers but might increase risk of cervical cancer. The overall reduction of cancer is generally worthwhile. Avoid certain types of breast implants as there is a small chance of increased cancer risk. Breastfeeding may reduce the mother’s breast cancer risk. Prenatal vitamins are important and may reduce cancer risk in the child. Childhood physical abuse is associated with elevated rates of cancer in adulthood.
Avoid infections, including sexually transmitted infections such as HIV and hepatitis, which greatly increase the risk of cancers. Follow the CDC schedule for vaccines. There is often some confusion for HPV vaccines. Both genders should get the HPV shot, as men can get penile, throat, and/or anal cancer. Young boys and girls should get the HPV vaccine. Young adults should get it. Older adults can also get it if sexually active. Gardasil 9 is FDA approved for women and men aged 27 to 45.
Lack of quality sleep has some moderate evidence linking to cancer. Could also have to do with weight gain and lack of exercise.
Vitamin D may reduce the risk of prostate and colon cancer. It likely requires a supplement if you do not get enough sunlight as it is very difficult to get enough with diet.
High doses of Vitamin E from supplementation may increase risk of cancer.
Get treated for stomach problems. Helicobacter pylori can increase risk of MALT lymphoma from chronic gastritis.
Avoid undercooked fish, especially in SE Asia. Opisthorchis viverrini can cause cholangiocarcinoma.
Avoid contaminated fresh water especially in Africa and the Middle East. Schistosoma hematobium can cause bladder cancer.
Other parasites may increase the risk of cancer, such as Toxocara canis. Infected dogs and related animals via oral-fecal transmission, eating soil, undercooked meat, and even stroking fur of infected dogs can result in infection.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis may increase risk of lung cancer.
Malassezia fungi overgrowth (which may likely be a large cause of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis) may increase risk of skin cancer.
Medicated shampoos may help control the overgrowth in the scalp. Malassezia may be linked to colorectal and pancreatic cancer. An overgrowth of Candida albicans may be linked to cancer, but is unproven.
Hair stylists who are regularly exposed to large quantities of professional hair products may have an increased risk of bladder cancer.
Certain types of moles or a large number of moles can increase cancer risk.
Very salty pickled foods may increase the risk of gastric cancer.
Drinking 4–6 cups of coffee (black) per day may reduce risk of colorectal cancer.
Kava consumption may reduce overall cancer risk but may also increase risk of melanoma. There is a risk of liver problems.
Exposure to air pollution (including indoor air pollution) may increase risk of cancer.
